Yoav Galant, currently a cabinet member, served in the IDF for over 30 years as an Aluf (Major General) and headed the IDF's Southern Command. His father was a partisan who was considered one of the IDF's finest snipers and was, in Operation Yoav in 1948, the first soldier to break into the infamous Iraq Suwaydan fort; Galant is named Yoav to commemorate the operation. Galant's wife is a retired IDF lieutenant colonel. Galant was government-approved to be Chief of General Staff. He was a naval commando, and later commander, in the 13th Flotilla as well as commander of the IDF's Jenin Brigade. He also commanded the reserve 340th Armored Division (Idan Formation). He attained the rank of major general when he became the Prime Minister's Military Secretary and then, as commander of the Southern Command, commanded Operation Cast Lead against the Hamas. Yesh Gvul (radical left NGO, filed an HCJ suit against Galant's appointment as IDF chief of staff. Benjamin Netanyahu said that Galant "proved his worth during his 33 years of military service at the IDF's frontlines" as "a courageous fighter, an excellent officer, and a responsible and serious battle commander."
